The Red Sox Don’t Need Rafael Devers
Rafael Devers is a top 10–15 hitter in Major League Baseball. Cool. But the returns are diminishing. Translation: he’s a prick and lacks a winning quotient.
The roster’s already overflowing with left-handed bats—not that any of them are as good as Devers, but still. Something had to give. Turns out, it was Devers’ petulant attitude and bloated contract.
Look at this team over the last few years—hitting hasn’t been the issue. And left-handed power? Yeah, not exactly a rare commodity here. Do I trust Craig Breslow to use the money saved to plug gaping holes in the rotation or bullpen? Absolutely not. But my lack of faith in the guy doesn’t change the reality: this team needs another front end or back end guy more than it needs Rafael Devers.
If—miraculously—they flip him for a legit pitcher and patch up the rotation, I’ll be the first to stand up and offer a golf clap. Until then, 2026 is shaping up almost as good as 2027 looks.
